Peter Evans solo | Terrie Ex solo

Solo trumpet at the extreme limits of composition and improvisation, with solo guitar beforehand.

Since 2002, Peter Evans has been redefining what a solo performance on trumpet can be. He is one of the pioneers of the genre and received early praise with More is More (2006, psi). His mastery of the instrument is total: with breath, valves, and embouchure, he creates a sound world that ranges from cutting overtones to microtonal textures. He has been compared to a tightrope walker, balancing between imaginative compositions and extraordinary play.

Each set is a living composition that adapts to the acoustics of the hall, the energy of the audience, and the space itself. Evans brings jazz, new music, and experimentation together, only to completely let go of the frameworks. His solo work has taken him to stages on five continents, from the Venice Biennale to clubs in Tokyo and São Paulo. Albums like Lifeblood, The Veil, and Into the Silence capture some of this, but the essence arises live.

'A torrent of breathtaking, athletic, and often unsettling virtuosity' (The New York Times).

The evening opens with a solo by Terrie Ex. He started playing guitar when he co-founded The Ex in 1979, simply because no one else wanted to play the instrument. With that band, he gave over two thousand concerts in 45 countries, but from the beginning, he also improvised freely, with among others Han Bennink, Ab Baars, Ken Vandermark, Paal Nilssen-Love, and Kaja Draksler. Peter Evans is also on his long list of playing partners. Since 2000, he has released his own improvisation projects and African music on his label TERP, from Getatchew Mekuria to Konono No.1. In 2025, his solo LP Flaps was released.
